Each year Doulas of Cincinnati hosts No Child Wet Behind to raise awareness and diapers for babies in need in our community. We are proud to have the support of our friends at Parental Hope as Silver Sponsors for 2018. Find out more about how Parental Hope is helping make people's dreams of a growing family come true.
According to the most recent National Survey of Family Grown, 1 in 8 couples suffer from infertility and approximately 7.3 million women annually require infertility treatment to conceive. In addition to the physical toll infertility can take on a woman’s body and the emotional dejection of a failed cycle, the financial burden placed on a couple battling infertility cannot be overstated.
The average cost of one-round of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in the United States is $12,500 not including medication costs, which can range from $1,000-$5,000 per round of IVF. And, because IVF is not guaranteed to result in pregnancy, many couples may require multiple rounds to become pregnant.
Despite the significant physical and emotional impact of an infertility diagnosis, only 15 States recognize infertility as a disease and have enacted laws that mandate employers cover some level of infertility treatment. Of these states, only 8 States require employers to cover the cost of IVF through their health insurance plans. Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky are not included in these 8 states. As a result, due to the lack of health insurance coverage, approximately 85% of infertility patients in the Greater Cincinnati area are self-paying.
Parental Hope is a Cincinnati-based non-profit that was organized to support the infertility warrior by raising awareness regarding infertility and providing emotional and financial support to couples battling infertility. Parental Hope accomplishes its mission in the following ways:
Through the Parental Hope Family Grants, Parental Hope helps alleviate the financial burden of infertility. Each grant covers the full cost of certain infertility treatment at the Institute for Reproductive Health.
Through various events and public outreach, Parental Hope advocates for those struggling with infertility by raising awareness and educating the public.
Through quarterly peer-led support, Parental Hope helps alleviate the emotional burden of couples battling infertility.
Since organizing in January 2016, Parental Hope has awarded twelve Parental Hope Family Grants to couples who have an infertility diagnosis and demonstrate a financial need. Of these 12 couples, two couple have given birth to babies, while five other couples are currently pregnant and due later this year. Without the support of Parental Hope, these couples would not have had the opportunity to achieve their dreams of parenthood.
The key to Parental Hope’s success has been its Board of Directors and volunteers, none of which take a salary ensuring that all money raised by Parental Hope is used to support its mission and those who need Parental Hope’s support. Additionally, the success of Parental Hope’s annual fundraiser, Journey to Parenthood, has been key to Parental Hope’s success.
This year’s Journey to Parenthood fundraiser will be held during National Infertility Awareness Week on April 21 at the Newport Syndicate. The highlight of the evening will be the IVF Raffle, where one attended will win a standard round of IVF. Last year’s winner is now pregnant! There will also be live entertainment by 3 Piece Revival, open bar, dinner by the bite, and an amazing silent auction. The event is hosted by Amy Scalia of Cincy Chic.
